How does an FFL transfer work in New Jersey?

Once it arrives, come in with your NJ ID and the proper NJ permit (FPID for long guns, Permit to Purchase for handguns). We complete the NICS background check and ATF Form 4473 on the spot, then you take your firearm home once approved. NICS background checks in NJ generally take 3 to 6 days.
How much does an FFL transfer cost at Firearms Express?
Our standard transfer fee is $60 total per firearm — $45 for transfer and processing plus $15 for the NICS background check. There are no hidden fees. The full $60 is due at the time of transfer.
Do I need a permit to receive a firearm transfer in New Jersey?
Yes. New Jersey law requires a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPID) to receive long guns, and a Permit to Purchase a Handgun to receive handguns. You must have the proper permit before your transfer arrives. We cannot complete a transfer without it.
How long does an FFL transfer take in New Jersey?
Once your firearm arrives at our shop and you come in with your ID and permit, the paperwork takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The NICS background check itself in NJ typically takes 3 to 6 days before you can pick up the firearm.
How much does firearm engraving cost?
Compliance and serial number engraving starts at $40 per firearm. Custom personalization — names, dates, dedications, and decorative designs — starts at $100. Final pricing depends on the complexity, size, and number of items. We provide an exact quote after reviewing your specific request.
What kinds of firearm engraving do you offer?
We offer three main types of engraving: ATF compliance engraving (required serialization for suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and personal builds), custom personalization (names, badges, dates, retirement gifts, dedications), and logo or artwork engraving from your vector files. We also engrave trophies, plaques, and commemorative pieces.
Can I bring in my own firearm to be engraved?

What is ATF compliance engraving and do I need it?
Compliance engraving applies the ATF-required information — maker, city, state, and serial number — to certain regulated firearms, including suppressors, short-barreled rifles, and personal firearm builds (such as 80% lowers). If you've manufactured a firearm or built a regulated NFA item, federal law requires it to be properly marked before transfer or use.
