Why train here

You don't have to want to be a shooter

Plenty of people take Pistol 101 and stop there. If there's a firearm in your house that isn't yours, or you inherited one, you'll leave able to handle it safely and tell whether it's loaded — without firing a shot.

Two hours, not eight

Most beginner courses run six to eight hours in one sitting and lose people partway through. Ours run two, and the beginner course is split across two sessions so the material has time to settle.

You see every shot

The laser shows you exactly where each shot lands, so faults get corrected in real time. There's no recoil while you're learning, which is how a clean trigger press gets built in the first place.

$15 instead of $100

An hour of live-fire range time runs well over $100 once you add the range fee and ammunition. Laser practice here is $15 for 20 minutes — so you can actually afford to repeat it.

Your instructor

Every class is taught personally by the Owner of Firearms Express.

Retired law enforcement

A career officer who completed academy training and qualified regularly throughout her service.

Current RPO status

Holds a Retired Police Officer (RPO) permit, maintained through ongoing semi-annual qualification, and carries off duty.

Gun Store Owner

Owns and operates Firearms Express, a licensed firearms dealer in Sussex, New Jersey, and handles firearms every day.

  • A monthly women's-only Pistol 101 is coming too. Details with the schedule.

Common questions

Anything not covered here, just ask — that's what we're for.

When do firearms training classes start at Firearms Express?
Training opens in August 2026 at our classroom, 70 E Main Street, Suite B1, Sussex, NJ 07461. Exact class dates are being finalized. Call (973) 534-8437, email Info@Firearms-Express.com, or stop in to get on the notification list and first pick of seats.
How many students are in each firearms class?
Group classes — Pistol 101, Pistol 102, and Academy Prep — cap at four students. Know Your Firearm is a private one-on-one session, and Laser Practice is booked individually. Small classes mean you get corrected in real time rather than sitting at the back of a room.
What is laser firearms training, and does it actually work?
A laser cartridge is fitted into an unloaded firearm and projects a mark where the shot would have landed. The fundamentals are the same skills whether the gun sends a round or a laser — and seeing the result of every trigger press is what makes beginners improve quickly. What it doesn't reproduce is recoil, so it builds your fundamentals rather than replacing live-fire range time. We'll always tell you when it's time to get to a range.
Do I need a New Jersey firearms permit to take a class?
No permit is required to attend Pistol 101, Pistol 102, or Academy Prep — no firearm is purchased and no live ammunition is used. If you're bringing your own handgun for Know Your Firearm or Laser Practice, you must be legally entitled to possess and transport it under New Jersey law, cased and unloaded.
How long are the classes, and why only two hours?
Group classes run two hours. Most beginner firearms courses run six to eight hours in a single sitting and lose people partway through. Ours are deliberately split into two two-hour sessions, usually about a week apart, so the material has time to settle before the next half builds on it.
Can I take just the safety class without learning to shoot?
Yes. Pistol 101 involves no shooting at all and stands on its own. It's built for people living with a firearm that isn't theirs, people who inherited one, and parents whose children spend time where firearms are present. Many students take Pistol 101 and stop there, which is completely fine.
What should I bring to a class?
For Pistol 101, Pistol 102, and Academy Prep — nothing. We provide everything you'll need and no experience is required. For Know Your Firearm and Laser Practice, bring your own handgun, cased and unloaded, and leave your ammunition at home or in the car. No live ammunition is permitted in the classroom.
Do you offer gift certificates for training?
We sell gift cards in store that can be used toward training as well as retail purchases. Ask at the counter or call (973) 534-8437.
