Read this before you book — a qualification is a test, not a lesson. Plan on arriving able to run your carry gun and draw it from a holster on your own; those are the skills we're scoring, not teaching that day. Not there yet? What this qualification is

New Jersey requires everyone applying for (or renewing) a Permit to Carry to complete a firearms qualification to the standard set by the New Jersey State Police — the Civilian Carry Assessment and Range Evaluation (CCARE). It has two parts: a classroom review of the legal use of force, and a live-fire range qualification with your carry firearm. Pass both and you receive a completed SP-182 Safe Handling & Proficiency Certification — the document you upload with your NJ Permit to Carry application.

We run the whole thing in-house: the classroom portion here in Sussex, and the live-fire qualification at our private range. It is taught and certified by a USCCA Certified Pistol Instructor and Range Safety Officer who is also a retired law enforcement officer.

What happens during the qualification

Warm-up & gear check. Everyone starts with a short refresher on the holster and drawing from concealment (15–30 minutes) and a look at your equipment. Come already comfortable drawing — this is a shake-out, not a first lesson.
The live-fire run. New Jersey's CCARE course of fire: 50 rounds total, ten from each of five distances (3, 5, 7, 10, and 15 yards), drawn from concealment, with your reloads and reholstering watched and scored. Put 40 of 50 on target — and keep the gun handling safe from start to finish — and you've passed.
Classroom & your SP-182. Everyone who clears the range sits down for the New Jersey use-of-force review, then leaves with a completed SP-182 to attach to a permit application.

A couple of things up front. Passing isn't automatic — if the gun handling isn't safe or the score comes in under 80%, you'll book a fresh attempt at the usual price. Carrying is a real responsibility, and it asks you to be safe, capable, and accurate behind the trigger. And once your qualification is finished and turned in, Firearms Express can't answer for later changes to the law or to your own circumstances.

What to bring

Firearm & holster

The handgun you're qualifying with. Optics are welcome.
A strong-side hip holster, IWB or OWB (see the holster rules below). You'll draw from concealment.

Equipment & ammunition

At least two magazines.
100 rounds of factory ammunition in your caliber — the qualification is 50 rounds; the rest covers your warm-up.
Eye and ear protection.

Attire

A sturdy gun belt and a loose cover garment (over-shirt or jacket) to conceal the firearm.
Jeans or tactical pants and closed-toe shoes — no open-toed shoes or sleeveless shirts.

Identification

An unexpired driver's license.
New Jersey residents: a Firearms ID card with a matching address (not required for out-of-state applicants).

A quick word on holsters. Bring a belt holster that rides on your strong-side hip — inside or outside the waistband, either's fine. It just has to do three things: keep the trigger guard covered, hang onto the gun on its own, and drop it back in the same spot every draw. The styles we can't run on the line are appendix or behind-the-back, cross-draw, shoulder, pocket, ankle, the stick-on kind, and belly bands. Going outside the waistband? Make sure whatever you've got on over it actually hides the gun. And if you're not sure your setup will pass, roll in a few minutes early — we'll take a look, and worst case we'll get you into one that works.

After you qualify

Save your SP-182. Keep a clear digital copy of your completed certification — you'll upload it with your application.
Apply online. New Jersey Permit-to-Carry applications (initial and renewal) go through the official NJSP Concealed Carry Permit portal.
Confirm your local requirements. Follow the instructions for your municipality or NJSP station — make sure your information, references, payment, and uploaded documents are complete.

Time it smart: your CCARE qualification and your NJ carry permit are generally each valid for two years. If you qualify and apply in the same window, the same qualification may still be valid when your first renewal comes up. Requirements change — always confirm the current renewal instructions before you submit.

Where you can — and can't — carry in NJ

A permit is not a green light everywhere. New Jersey restricts carrying in a long list of "sensitive places," and those rules — along with the private-property and vehicle rules — are being fought over in the courts right now and change often. Rather than post a list that could be out of date the week you read it, we point you to the sources that keep it current.

Is this a beginner class?

No — the qualification assumes you can already safely handle your carry firearm and draw from a holster. If you're not there yet, take CCW Prep / Holster Fundamentals (or Beginner Pistol if you're brand new) first, then qualify.

What do I need to bring?

Your carry firearm (cased, unloaded), a strong-side concealment holster, at least two magazines, 50 rounds of factory ammunition, a sturdy belt, a cover garment, and eye and ear protection. Don't have a piece of gear? We're a full gun shop and can set you up before your date.

What is the SP-182?

The SP-182 is New Jersey's Safe Handling & Proficiency Certification — the document proving you passed the required qualification. You upload it with your NJ Permit to Carry application or renewal.

How is the shooting portion scored?

The CCARE course is 50 rounds — 10 rounds at each of five distances (3, 5, 7, 10, and 15 yards) — on an FBI "Q" target, drawing from concealment, with graded reloads and reholstering. You need 80% (40 of 50) to pass.

How much is it, and how long?
