How an Inbound Transfer Works

Four steps from checkout to taking your firearm home — simple, fast, and fully compliant with New Jersey and federal law.

1 · Buy it online

Purchase from any licensed retailer — or shop 58,000+ firearms at Firearms-Express.com — and give the seller our FFL information to ship to.

2 · Tell us it's coming

Email Info@Firearms-Express.com or call so we can expect your package and log it the moment it lands.

3 · Come in with your NJ ID

Bring your ID and the proper NJ permit. We run your NICS background check and ATF Form 4473 on the spot. NICS in New Jersey generally takes 3–6 days to clear.

4 · Take it home

Once you are approved, pay the $60 transfer fee and the firearm is yours — done right and fully documented.

Before your transfer arrives — NJ permits

  • New Jersey requires a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPID) to receive a long gun.
  • A Permit to Purchase a Handgun is required to receive a handgun.
  • Have the correct permit in hand before the firearm ships so there is no delay at pickup.

Sending a Firearm Out

Need to send a firearm to a gunsmith, back to the manufacturer for warranty, or to a dealer in another state? You can't hand USPS, UPS, or FedEx a handgun yourself — as a licensed FFL, we package and ship it for you.

Dealer-to-dealer only

By law the firearm must go to a licensed FFL — the receiving dealer, or a gunsmith or manufacturer that holds one. We can't ship to a private residence.

Why you need an FFL

Since 2022, UPS and FedEx ship firearms only for FFL holders, and USPS won't accept a handgun from a private individual at all. An FFL has to send it — we make that simple and local.

What it costs

$50 per firearm plus the carrier cost by destination. Call (973) 534-8437 for a shipping quote.

Serving Northern Sussex County

We're at 70 East Main Street, Suite B1 in Sussex Plaza — a short drive for shooters across the region. If you've been driving to Newton or across the New York line for a transfer, we're often closer.

Transfer Questions

How much does an FFL transfer cost at Firearms Express? +
It's $60 total, all-inclusive, per firearm — $45 for the transfer and processing plus the $15 NICS background check, with nothing else added at the counter. Police, military, and first responders pay $50 with valid ID and also get 5% off ammunition and accessories.
Can Firearms Express receive a firearm I bought from any online dealer? +
Yes. We accept transfers from any licensed retailer or dealer — you are not limited to firearms bought from us. Give the seller our FFL information (or download it below and have them email us), and have the firearm shipped to 70 East Main Street, Suite B1, Sussex, NJ 07461.
How long does an FFL transfer take in New Jersey? +
Once your firearm arrives, come in with your NJ ID and the proper permit and we run the NICS background check and ATF Form 4473 on the spot. NICS checks in New Jersey generally take 3–6 days to clear, and you take the firearm home as soon as you are approved.
Do I need a permit to transfer a firearm in NJ? +
Yes. New Jersey requires a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FPID) to receive a long gun and a Permit to Purchase a Handgun to receive a handgun. Have the correct permit in hand before your transfer arrives so there is no delay picking it up.
Where is Firearms Express, and do you serve my town? +
We are at 70 East Main Street, Suite B1 in Sussex Plaza, Sussex, NJ. We handle transfers for shooters across northern Sussex County — Wantage, Vernon, Hamburg, Franklin, Hardyston, Sparta, and Newton — and we are often closer than the shop you have been driving to.
Can you ship a firearm out of state or to a gunsmith for me? +
Yes. As a licensed FFL we ship firearms outbound for $50 plus the carrier cost — to another dealer, to a gunsmith for repair or custom work, or back to the manufacturer for warranty service. By law it ships dealer-to-dealer: the destination must hold an FFL, so we cannot ship to a private residence.
Why can't I just ship the firearm myself? +
Since 2022, UPS and FedEx accept firearm shipments only from FFL holders, and USPS will not take a handgun from a private individual at all. A licensed dealer has to send it for you — we make that quick and local.
How do I know my firearm is legal in New Jersey before I order? +
New Jersey has strict rules on features, magazine capacity, and configuration. You are responsible for ordering an NJ-compliant firearm — non-compliant guns may face modification or restocking fees from the retailer — so confirm your specific model meets NJ requirements before you buy. If you are not sure, call us at (973) 534-8437 before you order and we will help.
